What Structured Cabling Means
"Structured cabling" is the umbrella term for a building's data and voice cabling done right — standardized cable types, properly installed pathways, labeled drops, terminated to spec, and certified before turnover. It's the difference between a one-off "throw some cable in" job and a system that holds up to 10 years of network growth, audit, and warranty claims.
The Three Cable Choices
- Cat5e — supports Gigabit Ethernet at full distance. The budget choice for legacy environments, voice-only runs, and projects where you're certain you'll never need more than 1 Gigabit at the desk. Most new commercial work has moved past this.
- Cat6 — the default for general commercial office build-outs. Supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to ~55m, 1 Gigabit at full 100m, lower NEXT and return-loss margins than Cat5e. Right choice for the vast majority of office TI work.
- Cat6a — supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet at full 100m and is the recommended baseline for high-density WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 access point backhaul, 10G server-to-switch runs, and any future-proofing job where you'd rather not re-pull in 7 years. About 25-40% more material cost than Cat6, but cheaper than re-pulling.
Our Structured Cabling Process
- Site survey — we walk the space, identify pathway constraints (above-ceiling, under-floor, conduit), check for asbestos / fireproofing concerns, plan IDF/MDF locations
- Quote and BOM — written quote with drop count, cable type, jack configuration, patch panel count, pathway hardware (J-hooks, tray, conduit), and labor by line item
- Pull and terminate — cables pulled in pathway (not loose-laid above ceiling), all drops terminated at both ends, all patch panels labeled, all jacks labeled
- Certify and document — Fluke DSX-8000 permanent-link or channel test on every drop, signed PDF report, copies for you, your IT team, and your warranty paperwork
- Walk-through and handoff — we walk the IDF/MDF with your IT lead, hand over the label key, and provide as-built drop maps
Warranties and Compliance
We install to TIA/EIA-568 standards and offer system-level warranties from Panduit, Leviton, CommScope, and Belden when their components are specified end-to-end. For prevailing-wage and government work (federal, state, school district), we deliver certified payroll, Davis-Bacon documentation, and compliance reports per spec.
